ASSESSMENTS
All clients participate in a variety of standardized and clinical assessments in order to
determine current strengths and needs. Assessments may also include information
gathered from clients’ other therapists, physicians, and caregivers. In order to evaluate
progress, the music therapist conducts reassessments at regular intervals.
GOAL SETTING
Based on the information gathered during the assessment, goals are set that target clients’
everyday activity needs. These functional, individualized goals may be in areas such as
- Timing and coordination of motor movements
- Speech production
- Attention and memory
- Social interaction
- Learning
- Behavior modification
- Stress reduction
GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS
Prior to each session, the music therapist determines which NMT techniques are most
appropriate to address the established goals. The therapist adapts these techniques to
unique client needs by developing specific interventions that will facilitate progress toward
client goals. More than simple music listening, these interventions are designed to
actively engage the client in therapeutic pursuits. Sessions are usually one hour in length,
1 - 2 times per week. Bayside Music Therapy provides specific homework exercises in
order to further progress between sessions.
DOCUMENTATION
All clients and/or caregivers receive a thorough written assessment and regular progress
notes. Progress notes are generally written every three months following initiation of
sessions, but adjustments to this schedule can be made on an individual basis. A discharge
summary is provided when services are terminated. The music therapist completes a
report following each therapy session, and these daily session notes can be furnished upon
request.
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
Bayside Music Therapy works in conjunction with clients’ other therapists and care
providers. This cooperative approach allows for a multi-modal treatment plan that can
maximize client progress.
